UPSC Mains Test Series

The Mains is where the examination is actually decided

The written Mains papers carry 1,750 marks. The Personality Test carries 275. Everything that determines your rank, and therefore your service and your cadre, is settled across nine papers written over five days. The Prelims contributes nothing to it. (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.)

Of those nine, two are language papers that are qualifying and do not count towards the merit list, and seven do: the Essay, four General Studies papers and two optional papers, at 250 marks each. (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.)

Now the arithmetic that decides everything. A General Studies paper is 250 marks in 180 minutes. In recent years that has been twenty questions, so roughly nine minutes each, and within those nine minutes you must read the question, decide what it is actually asking, plan a structure, and write between 150 and 250 words in legible handwriting.

Nine minutes. That is the examination. Not what you know, but what you can get onto paper about what you know, in nine minutes, twenty times in a row, on the fourth day of five.

There is exactly one way to get better at that, and it is to do it and have someone competent tell you what was wrong with it.

The evaluation is the product

Anybody can set a question paper. You could set one yourself out of the previous year papers in twenty minutes, and it would be a perfectly serviceable question paper.

What you cannot do for yourself is read your own answer as an examiner reads it. You know what you were driving at in that second paragraph, so your eye supplies the connection that is not on the page. An examiner has no such generosity. An examiner has a few minutes, a large pile, and only the words you actually wrote.

So the honest way to describe this product is that you are buying an evaluator's attention, and the question paper is the pretext for obtaining it. That framing decides how the whole series is built, and it is why the questions below about who marks and how fast they mark are the only questions that matter.

What a marked script from us looks like:

  • Comments written on the script itself, next to the sentence they refer to, not a summary at the bottom.
  • Marks broken down by question, not one total.
  • Whether you answered the question that was asked. The most common reason a well-informed answer scores badly is that it answers a related question the candidate would have preferred.
  • Structure: introduction, body and conclusion actually doing distinct work rather than restating one another.
  • Substantiation: whether your claims carry an example, a committee, a report, a figure or a case, and where a general statement should have carried a specific one.
  • Presentation: sub-headings, diagrams and flow charts where they earn space, and legibility, which is not a trivial matter in a paper marked at volume.
  • One instruction for the next paper. Not seven. One thing to change, so that the next script can be checked against it.

The schedule

The UPSC Annual Calendar 2027 places the Civil Services Main Examination from 20 August 2027, over five days, with the Preliminary Examination on 23 May 2027 (source: upsc.gov.in/examinations/exam-calendar). The Mains series therefore has two natural intakes: a foundation phase running before Prelims for candidates building the writing habit early, and an intensive phase in the ten weeks between the Prelims result and the Mains itself, which is the period in which most Mains preparation actually happens and in which most candidates find they have run out of time.

Who evaluates your script

This is the question we are asked most often and the one competitors answer least. We would rather publish four names with real credentials than claim "a panel of experts".

Turnaround

Feedback that arrives three weeks later is a report on a person you no longer are. You have forgotten why you structured the answer that way, so you cannot learn from being told it was the wrong structure.

The Answer Writing Programme → is question-level practice on a weekly cadence, for building speed and structure. This is full three-hour papers under examination conditions, for testing whether the habit holds when the clock is real. Most candidates need both, in that order.

What if I have already enrolled in the Crash Course?

Tell us when you enquire. The Crash Course includes its own periodic assessment, so before you pay for anything we will explain how it relates to this test series and what a Crash Course student pays. Call +91 95976 93209 or book a free counselling session →.
