UPSC Mains Coaching
Prelims decides who is allowed to compete. Mains decides the result.
Of the 2,025 marks that determine your rank, 1,750 come from the written Main Examination and 275 from the Personality Test. Not one Prelims mark is carried forward. (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.) A candidate can be extremely well informed and still fail Mains, because Mains does not test what you know. It tests what you can produce, in a specified structure, in about seven minutes an answer, by hand, for three hours, twice a day, over several days.
That is a manufacturing problem as much as an intellectual one, and it responds to practice and evaluation far more than to lectures.
What Mains actually consists of
The Main Examination comprises nine papers in total: two qualifying language papers, an Essay paper, four General Studies papers, and two optional subject papers. Only the latter seven — 250 marks each, 1,750 total — count towards merit; the two language papers must be passed but earn no rank marks. (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.) Broadly:
| Paper | Territory |
|---|---|
| Essay | Two essays on themes with no syllabus, marked on structure, argument and range as much as content |
| General Studies I | Indian heritage and culture, history, geography of the world and society |
| General Studies II | Governance, Constitution, polity, social justice and international relations |
| General Studies III | Economy, technology, environment, security and disaster management |
| General Studies IV | Ethics, integrity and aptitude, including case studies |
| Optional Paper I and II | Your chosen subject, at a level well above graduation |
Add to that the two qualifying language papers, which candidates ignore at real risk: fail one, and the rest of your scripts are not evaluated. (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.)
What we teach, and how
The four General Studies papers, taught for the Mains standard rather than the Prelims standard. The same topic is a different subject at the two stages. Prelims asks whether you know that a body exists. Mains asks whether it works, why it does not, and what you would change. Teaching that gets this wrong is the most common defect in General Studies coaching.
Essay taught as its own discipline. Essay is worth as much as a General Studies paper, has no syllabus, and is where the widest score gaps in the whole examination appear. It is not "general knowledge written longer".
Ethics, taught with case studies rather than definitions. General Studies IV rewards a candidate who can reason through a situation with competing legitimate claims and defend a decision. It does not reward memorised philosopher lists.
Answer writing, with evaluated scripts. This is the part that cannot be substituted. You write, somebody who knows the standard reads it and marks it against it, you get it back with the marks explained, and you write the same answer again.
Model answers and the discussion afterwards. A model answer without a discussion of why it scores is decoration.
Which programme includes Mains coaching
| If you are | The programme | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Building from the beginning, over a longer horizon | UPSC Foundation Course, Sundays and public holidays | ₹15,000 |
| Revising the full syllabus intensively against a date | UPSC Crash Course, live weekday classes | ₹65,000 |
| Already prepared and needing evaluation, not teaching | Mains Test Series or the Answer Writing Programme | See fees page |
Optional subject teaching
Your optional carries two papers and is frequently where ranks are decided, because it is the only part of the examination where you can be genuinely expert. Samkalp Coimbatore's optional teaching is set out on its own page, including which subjects we can actually teach.

If you have written Mains and not converted, the useful question is not "which course should I take". It is "what did my scripts actually score, and where". Bring your marksheet to a counselling session. We will read it with you before recommending anything, and if the answer is a test series rather than a course, that is what we will tell you.
