UPSC Eligibility Checker
Six questions. The answer appears on the screen. There is no form in front of it, no phone number required, and no email needed to see your result — the email box at the end is optional and exists only if you want a copy of the reasoning to keep or to show somebody.
The checker works from the four rules that actually decide eligibility: citizenship, educational qualification, age and attempts. All four must be satisfied. Most tools check one.
How it decides — the logic in plain English
We publish the logic because a tool that will not show its working is asking you to trust an unaccountable answer about something consequential.
Gate 1 — Citizenship
If you are a citizen of India, this gate passes for every service. If you are a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 intending to settle permanently, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from one of the countries named in the notice intending to settle permanently, the gate passes for the other services in the examination but not for the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Foreign Service or the Indian Police Service, and you will additionally need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. If none of the categories applies, the gate fails.
Gate 2 — Qualification
"Degree completed" passes. "Final year, result awaited" passes, with a condition attached to the result screen. "MBBS or BDS passed, internship not complete" passes, with a different condition. "Foreign degree" passes conditionally, subject to the Commission being satisfied as to equivalence. "Currently in an earlier year" and "Diploma or no degree" fail for this cycle, with the year you first become eligible calculated and shown.
Gate 3 — Age
We take the reference date for the cycle you selected — 1 August of the year of the examination — and compute your age on that date. You must have attained 21 years. You must not have attained the upper limit, which is 32 years before relaxation, plus: three years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), five years for SC and ST, ten years for a person with benchmark disability, and five years for an ex-serviceman meeting the notified conditions. Where the notice permits it, relaxations stack cumulatively. EWS carries no age relaxation.
Gate 4 — Attempts
Six for General and EWS. Nine for OBC. Unrestricted for SC and ST, subject to the age limit. Nine for a person with benchmark disability in the General, EWS or OBC categories, and unrestricted for a person with benchmark disability who is SC or ST. We subtract the number you entered and show you how many remain.
What this tool is not
It computes the four rules against what you told it. It cannot verify anything. The Commission checks eligibility against original documents only after you have qualified for the Personality Test, and candidates have been removed at that stage. A result from this page is arithmetic, not a determination, and it is not a substitute for reading the notice.
If your case is unusual — a disputed date of birth, a category certificate issued late, a degree from an institution whose recognition you are unsure of, a cancelled candidature, or a previous debarment — the tool will not help you and neither will any other tool. Ask us directly or read the notice itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this eligibility checker free? Do I have to give my phone number?
It is free and it asks for nothing. Your result appears on the screen. The email box comes after the result and is optional — it exists only so you can keep a copy of the reasoning.
How do you calculate my UPSC age?
Against 1 August of the examination year, which is the reference date in the notice, not against today's date and not against the date of the examination. This is why the tool asks which cycle you are checking for.
What counts as an attempt?
Actual appearance in at least one paper of the Preliminary Examination. Applying does not count. Receiving an admit card does not count. Appearing in one paper and going home counts as a full attempt. A later cancellation does not return it. Full detail on how many UPSC attempts you get.
Can final-year students use this checker?
Yes, and it is one of the cases the tool is built for. Select 'Final year, result awaited' at question 5. You are eligible for the written stage, with a condition that attaches if you are called for the Personality Test.
Is the result from this tool official?
No. It computes the rules in the examination notice against what you entered. The Commission verifies eligibility against original documents only after a candidate qualifies for the Personality Test. Treat the result as arithmetic that you should check against the notice, not as a determination.
How often is the tool updated?
Within seven days of every new examination notification, and the page shows the notice number and the date the rules were last checked. If that date is more than a cycle old, do not rely on the tool. Our editorial policy sets out the review process.
