UPSC CSAT Coaching

Paper II is qualifying. That is not the same as unimportant.

The Civil Services Aptitude Test is the second paper of the Preliminary Examination. It carries 200 marks and you must score 33 per cent, which is 66 marks, to qualify. If you do not, your General Studies Paper I is not evaluated at all. It does not matter what you scored in it. Your attempt is over (ThePrint, on the history of the 33 per cent rule). (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.)

That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the advice to "not waste time on CSAT" is the most expensive free advice in this examination.

The honest part: CSAT eliminates real candidates every year

UPSC does not publish how many candidates fail on Paper II alone, so nobody can give you a percentage and you should distrust anyone who does. What is documented is the structural effect.

CSAT was introduced in 2011 with its marks counting towards merit. Following sustained protest, those marks were removed from merit in 2014, and from 2015 the paper became strictly qualifying at 33 per cent. Across that period the composition of the successful cohort changed measurably. Humanities graduates were 44 per cent of selections in 2009 and 27 per cent in 2011, the first CSAT year, and have remained below 30 per cent since. In the 2023–24 data, engineering, science and medical graduates together accounted for around 71 per cent of selections. Hindi-medium candidates fell from 17 per cent of recruits in 2013 to 2.11 per cent in 2014, and stayed below 5 per cent for the following five years (ThePrint).

This is not a settled matter. In March 2026 a parliamentary committee chaired by Brij Lal recommended that UPSC undertake a comprehensive review to rationalise the CSAT component, including its syllabus and level of difficulty, on the basis of empirical analysis of performance patterns. In April 2026 the committee's chair described CSAT in Parliament as the biggest barrier to diversity in the services, and said it should be either abolished or rationalised (ThePrint).

What this means for you, stated plainly. If you are an arts, commerce, literature, law or life-sciences graduate, or if you were taught in Tamil medium, you are in the group that CSAT is hardest on. That is a statement about the paper, not about you. It also means that treating Paper II as an afterthought is a specific and avoidable way to lose a year.

And the other side of it. CSAT is a fixed, finite, teachable paper with a low bar. Sixty-six marks out of two hundred is not a demanding target. Candidates who work at it in a structured way pass it comfortably and stop thinking about it. Almost nobody who prepares properly fails CSAT. The failures come from candidates who did not open the book.

What the paper contains

AreaWhat it tests
ComprehensionLong passages, several questions each, some on abstract or argumentative text. The largest single block of marks and the one most affected by reading speed
Interpersonal skills including communicationSituational judgement, often with more than one defensible answer
Logical reasoning and analytical abilitySyllogisms, statement-and-assumption, arrangements, blood relations, direction sense
Decision making and problem solvingSituational questions.
General mental abilitySeries, coding, puzzles
Basic numeracy and data interpretation, up to Class X levelRatios, percentages, time and work, speed and distance, averages, tables and graphs

The paper is two hours, 80 questions, 200 marks, with one-third of a question's marks deducted for each wrong answer. (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.)

How we teach it

Diagnostic first. You sit a full past paper under time before any teaching happens. Most candidates discover their problem is not the mathematics. It is that comprehension consumed ninety minutes and they never reached the reasoning section.

Basic numeracy taught from the beginning, without embarrassment. A graduate who has not done arithmetic since Class X is not deficient, they are out of practice. Sessions are pitched accordingly and nobody is made to feel slow.

Comprehension taught as a technique, not as reading. Which passages to attempt, which to abandon, how to find the answer without reading every line, and how to handle a passage on a subject you find dull. This is where most CSAT marks are won and lost.

Reasoning taught by type, then drilled. There are a limited number of question forms and they recur. Recognition speed is the whole skill.

Paper strategy under time. Sequence, time allocation per section, when to guess given negative marking, and the point at which to stop attempting and start checking.

Full-length timed papers to the standard of the hardest recent years, not the easiest. A candidate who has only practised on gentle papers is unprepared for a year in which the paper is severe.

Where CSAT sits in our programmes

CSAT is taught within the UPSC Foundation Course at ₹15,000, which runs on Sundays and public holidays, and within the UPSC Crash Course at ₹65,000, which runs live on weekdays.

If you cleared the General Studies cut-off in a previous year but were stopped by Paper II, say so when you call. That is a specific, fixable problem with a short remedy, and it does not require you to buy a full course.

FAQs

What are the CSAT qualifying marks?

Thirty-three per cent of 200, which is 66 marks. Below that, your General Studies Paper I is not evaluated and you do not clear Prelims, whatever you scored in Paper I. (UPSC Civil Services Examination Rules.)

Do CSAT marks count towards my rank?

No. CSAT has been strictly qualifying since 2015; its marks were removed from merit calculation in 2014 after protests. Only General Studies Paper I decides the Prelims cut-off, and no Prelims mark carries into the final merit list (ThePrint).

Is CSAT harder for non-engineering graduates?

The paper's content is Class X level mathematics and general reasoning, so it is nearer to familiar ground for candidates with a quantitative background. The documented shift in the composition of selected candidates after 2011 is consistent with that. The practical implication is not that arts graduates cannot pass it, because most do. It is that arts graduates should plan preparation time for it from the start rather than in the last month.

How much time should I give CSAT?

Sit a past paper under time and let the score decide. A candidate scoring above 110 in a diagnostic needs periodic maintenance and no more. A candidate scoring under 70 needs consistent weekly work from the beginning of their preparation, and should not defer it.

Is CSAT being scrapped?

No decision has been announced. A parliamentary committee recommended in March 2026 that UPSC review and rationalise the CSAT component, and its chair told Parliament in April 2026 that the paper should be abolished or rationalised. That is a recommendation, not a change in the examination. Prepare for the paper as it stands.
