CSAT Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme

1. Reading Comprehension (approx. 25–30 Questions)
Short to medium paragraphs on environment, economics, governance, science, and philosophy. Questions test inferential logic, critical assumptions, corollary deductions, and main message identification.
2. Logical Reasoning & Analytical Ability (approx. 15–20 Questions)
Syllogisms, blood relations, direction sense, seating arrangements, coding-decoding, order and ranking, statement-arguments, and critical reasoning puzzles.
3. Basic Numeracy & Mathematics (approx. 25–30 Questions)
Class X matriculation standard mathematics:
- Number Systems (divisibility rules, remainders, unit digit, factors)
- Percentages, Profit and Loss, Simple & Compound Interest
- Ratio & Proportion, Mixtures & Alligations, Averages
- Time and Work, Pipes and Cisterns
- Speed, Time, and Distance (trains, boats, relative speed)
- Permutation, Combination & Probability
- Geometry & Mensuration (basic 2D & 3D area and volume)
4. Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency
Tables, Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Line Graphs, and multi-statement data sufficiency questions requiring evaluation of whether statement (1) or (2) suffices to answer.
Why Aspirants Struggle with CSAT (And How to Fix It)
In recent UPSC cycles, CSAT has eliminated many candidates who scored well above the GS Paper 1 cutoff. The primary causes are:
- Overconfidence: Neglecting Paper II until the final 3 weeks before Prelims.
- Time Trap: Spending 5+ minutes on tricky math problems instead of cherry-picking easy questions.
- Negative Marking: Guessing excessively on ambiguous comprehension options.
Recommended Target: Attempt 45–50 high-confidence questions with 85%+ accuracy to easily achieve 80–95 marks, well clear of the 66.67 cutoff.
